This small village school has 262 students from five local villages, ranging from kindergarten to aged 12. Class sizes range from 20 to 31 students.

You will have the full support of the village Head of School in developing the students' confidence in using English and interacting with foreigners.

This small school in Nongplaman village is situated 26 kilometres from Chiang Mai Northern Thailand. The school is a 5 minute bicycle ride from the PTIS International School. Facilities are basic, but adequate.

Why the school needs an English teacher.

The children at this school have little or no contact with foreigners and would really benefit from the experience of interacting with a native English speaker on a longer term basis. The school is equipped with computers but the students lack the language ability to use them to their full potential. Proficiency in English is a key factor in expanding the horizons of these students.

Your role as a volunteer teacher.

You will be working with all grades, preparing and delivering lessons that cover the required curriculum in imaginative and exciting ways. In addition to this, you will be helping in community events that include the school. Getting involved with other activities such as music, sport and scouts is also welcomed, according to your interests. You will be working Monday - Friday in the school, with weekends and school holidays free to explore Thailand.

Is this for you?

You do not need formal experience of teaching to apply for this placement, although experience of working with children would be an advantage. You will be a fluent English speaker with a love of children and able to use your imagination to make learning exciting and fun. You will need to be flexible, hard working and willing to adapt to a different culture and the challenge of working in a non-English speaking environment. Basic knowledge of computers would be welcomed.

This is an animal placement with a difference - a chance to learn in-depth theory and practice of animal husbandry, animal therapy and more.

As a more long term volunteer, with an interest in all things animal, you will get the chance to learn hands on animal husbandry with the sanctuary owner, Marianne Willemse. Marianne has been working in animal care in Chiang Mai since 1990 and is extremely experienced in animal husbandry and animal therapy.

Love Animal Sanctuary is currently home to 17 dogs, 1 goat, 25 cows and bullocks, 1 civet cat, 3 monkeys, 5 buffaloes, in addition to cats, chicken and geese.

Your role as a volunteer

You will be working closely with all the animals at the shelter, learning in depth how to care for them, both theory and practise. You will have the opportunity to learn animal therapy, and using animals for healing. Instruction in dog grooming and training will also be given. You will be involved in facilitating children’s visits and there is scope for developing a café and gift shop.

Is this for you?

First and foremost, you must love all kinds of animals and be interested in their welfare. An enthusiasm to expand skills and knowledge of animal husbandry and a willingness for a hands-on approach is necessary. You will also be interested in helping children to learn from animals. You must be flexible and hard working, and be prepared to be given lots of love from the animal residents!

This elephant sanctuary was established in 1995 and is unique in Thailand. The adult elephants living here have all been rescued from abuse or use in the illegal logging trade.

This placement gives you the chance to live on site, learning how to care for these most majestic of animals.

Elephants at the park enjoy as natural existence, roaming free in the grounds, not performing shows or tricks for tourists as in other elephant camps.

Park details

The Elephant Nature Park is situated in the Mae Taeng valley, Northern Thailand and is currently home to 30 rescued elephants, including two young elephants. The Park welcomes visitors on a daily basis and seeks to educate about elephant behaviour, ecology and conservation. Training of the young elephants is carried out using positive re-inforcement, without causing physical or psychological pain to the animal. The Park has close links with remote hill tribes and works in conjunction with visitors on community service projects in these villages. There are also 20 rescued dogs living at the park.

Why the Park needs an intern.

The Elephant Nature Park is non-profit making and survives on donations and income from visitors to provide food and medical supplies. Interns provide an extra pair of hands and help to educate visitors in elephant ecology and conservation.

Your role as an intern.

Your responsibilities as an intern will include helping to prepare food for and feed the elephants, bathing them in the river, and educating and guiding groups of visitors who come to the park on a daily basis. In addition to this, your day may include working on the adjoining farm land. The Park also works closely with remote hill tribe villages and you will be involved in helping on various community service projects.

Is this for you?

You do not need any specific skills for this placement, but a love of and respect for animals is a must. You will need to be someone who enjoys working ‘hands on’ in the heat and open air in a tropical country. An ability to engage with student and adult visitors and experience of working with the general public would be welcomed. You must be open to experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, not afraid of getting your hands dirty and able to live in rustic conditions.

As an intern you will be helping to research and collate information about the status of women in all areas of life and society. The main project of WSC is to give rural women paralegal training and to increase their political literacy.

Centre details.

The Womens Studies Centre is located on the campus of Chiang Mai University, in the city of Chiang Mai. It has a small staff and houses the largest library of feminist literature in Thailand. In addition to the paralegal training programme the Centre runs, it works with partner organisations to organize and run workshops and seminars. You will have accommodation close to the University site, near the city centre. This is an excellent position from which to explore all the attractions that Chiang Mai, and the surrounding area has to offer and to really take part in authentic Thai city life.

Why the centre needs an English speaking intern.

At present the staffing of the centre is entirely Thai and the level of English proficiency varies from good to non-English speaking. The Centre is very keen to welcome an English speaker to help with research and creating seminars and workshops.

Your role as an intern.

One of your main tasks will be collating information about womens issues from English speaking press, in addition to helping to organise seminars and workshops with WSC partner organisations. A site visit to a current paralegal training area will be undertaken. You will be helping to publish the yearly review and responding to requests for information from other English speakers.

Is this for you?

You do not need formal research qualifications in order to fill this placement, but a good knowledge of how to use libraries and the internet for research is required. You will need to be outgoing and willing to work in an environment where English is not the dominant language. Flexible and with a good sense of humour, this placement offers the chance to get into the heart of the discipline of Womens Studies, whilst also providing an excellent immersion into Thai culture, language and tradition.
